I tried updating Flash player to version 10, but this had no effect.

Nobody seems to know how to fix this, but a workaround was posted on the mozilla forums.

Add the following to your adblock filter, which will remove the related videos, and stop the crashing.

It’s not a perfect solution, but it works for me!

It uses a light sensor to detect the colours of the squares, then flips and rotates the cube to solve the puzzle. It seems quite simple, yet the idea of using one arm to flip it and then rotate with only one plane is quite ingenious.

Stellarium sohwing constellations

It’s great if you want to go out on a clear night and look for the constellations, maybe you’ve noticed a flashing star some nights and wonder what it is? (probably Sirius)

If you see any stars or constellations and want to know what they are, you can easily open up Stellarium and locate it.

A dynamically generated image that displays the approximate period of the sun/moon.

Why would I want one?

Because it works based on YOUR time zone, it will visually show your blog readers what your local time is, and it’s kinda cute.

How do I get one?

Click here, enter the width you require (in pixels), and select your location from the table, hit submit. Then copy and paste the HTML code into your blog template, or maybe even use it as a forum signature image.

Mandriva control centre has been given a facelift, and in my opinion it looked better before! The icons have been updated, and some look better, but some are worse.

Mandriva control centre (MCC) was one of the main things that attracted me to Mandriva when I first started using it, and I still love it, it makes it so easy to find all the configuration tools you need but the redesign just seems like a step in the wrong direction.

Dolphin

The new file manager (Dolphin) is similar to the old Konqueror file manager, but has a couple of obvious improvements.

You can open two directories in a single window, handy for when you are shifting files around.

The current path text box has been replaced with a breadcrumb trail similar to nautilus, but you can (with a single click) swap it for an editable text box, then back to the breadcrumb trail.

The left side of the split window has the breadcrumb trail, and the right side has the editable location bar, you can also quickly access a directory listing from the trail.

Plasmoids

Plasmoids are basically desktop widgets, you can clutter your desktop with the usual things; calculator, weather widget, sticky notes, clock, slideshow.

Summary

As with most distro updates, it’s important to keep up to date with the latest kernel and patches, so I guess this is less of a review of Mandriva 2009 and more of a comparison between KDE3 and KDE4. If you are using 2008.1, you’ll probably update anyway.

I am not very familiar with KDE4 yet, so at the moment I would say I prefer KDE3 (which can be installed on 2009 also) but in time it will probably grow on me.

If you don’t already use Mandriva or you are looking for a nice starting point for your first Linux experience, then Mandriva is a nice distro that is fairly newbie-friendly and my personal preference over the de facto standard of Ubuntu.

Beware though, there are a few bugs “features” listed here.

Wow command centre - running 36 WoW accounts

I thought WoW had run it’s course by now, but I guess if you’re spending $5711 per year on subscriptions, you’re gonna want to get your moneys’ worth.

It costs me exactly $5711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule. Not bad considering I’m looking at it like it’s a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft.

My new provider gives me more disk space, more bandwidth, but a few less features. Hopefully it will still be as fast as the previous host, but since the new host was actually cheaper I wouldn’t bank on it (you wouldn’t believe how cheap it was [99p/1-year])

FireFTP is a Firefox addon that does pretty much everything you want but just opens as a new tab inside firefox, you can add it as a bookmark and open with one click, or even add to speedial.

It’s very fast opening (assuming you already have Firefox open) and the GUI is similar to almost every other FTP client with your local directories on the left and remote directories on the right hand side.

Since I started using Entrecard just over a week ago, I’ve seen my daily unique visitors double to just over 100. Great? Well, not really.
Only 50 people have clicked one of my 25 1-day adverts; on average 2 clicks per advert.

Lots land, drop, then leave. Quite a few have commented, but how many have converted to regular readers, I don’t know.

What is EC good for?

As far as I can tell, it’s great for generating (somewhat artificial) traffic, and is great to find other similar blogs that are worth reading. I’ve stumbled across a couple that I now read and would probably never found without Entrecard.

I am saving up to try my advert on some of the more expensive blogs, but with EC, more expensive does not mean the blog is more popular or has more visitors. There is defiantly room for improvement in the EC popularity calculation and whole system overall.

Don’t be supprised if the Entrecard widget disappears by the end of the month!
